Oakland Ballet Presents Luna Mexicana: A Day of the Dead Celebration

11/03/2017
7:00 下午 - 10:00 下午
The Paramount Theatre
Oakland

Oakalnd Ballet presents Graham Lustig’s Luna Mexicana, a family-friendly celebration of the Mexican Day of the Dead, at the Paramount Theatre on Friday, November 3 at 7pm. The program features festive choreography, vivid costumes, striking makeup and a mix of folkloric and modern Mexican music. Based on traditional Mexican Dia de los Muertos celebrations, where the living honor the spirits of the dead with offerings of food, music and dance, Luna Mexicana tells the story of a young woman whose departed loved ones joyously dance back to life in the form of teetering skeletons, skirt-swishing girls, a high flying “deer dancer” and a rickety bride and groom duet.

Tickets are $20-$45, with discounts available for seniors, college students, and children under age 18.

Children of Hobbes

11/17/2017-11/19/2017
7:00 下午 - 11:00 下午
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center
Berkeley

November 17-19, Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm, Sunday at 7:00 pm

In 1651, the philosopher Thomas Hobbes wrote: “In the nature of man, we find three principle causes of quarrel: competition, diffidence and glory.”

The evening-length dance “Children of Hobbes” is a direct response to our nation’s current politics. Just as the 2016 election revealed the darker side of human nature that usually hides in the shadows and corners, this dance exposes the power imbalances and moral dilemmas resulting from the endlessly complex interplay between individuals and society.

Presented by Quicksilver Dance.
