“Fantastic! One of the great epics of all time and my favorite Shahnameh brought to life in a spectacular fashion by Hamid Rahmanian with shadow puppet design and cinematic wizardry.”

–Frances Ford Coppola

WHAT:
After sold-out performances at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and UCLA’s Freud Playhouse, the cinematic marvel Feathers of Fire: A Persian Epic returns to San Francisco for a limited run. Audiences can prepare for a spectacle like none they’ve ever seen. Visual artist and 2014 Guggenheim Fellow Hamid Rahmanian, in collaboration with San Francisco-based shadow master Larry Reed and ShadowLight Productions, present Feathers of Fire: A Persian Epic, based on the 10th-century classic Persian epic, Shahnameh (The Book of Kings).
Suitable for all ages, Feathers of Fire tells the enthralling tale of Zaul and Rudabeh, two young lovers of old Persia. Zaul is raised by a mythical bird in the wild. His deep love for Rudabeh enables them both to triumph over inconceivable odds, and then give birth to a beloved son, Rostam—the most important mythological hero of Shahnameh. Using shadow puppetry to create stunning “live animation” on a cinema-size screen, the action-packed tale is a visual spectacle like no other.

WHY:
Witness live behind-the-scenes techniques of shadow puppetry with colorful costumes and dynamic visuals. See the ancient tale of Shahnameh by poet Ferdowsi, come to life, utilizing eight actors, 160 puppets and 15 masks and costumes. Frances Ford Coppola has given his testament to the program. Coppola says its, “Fantastic! One of the great epics of all time and my favorite Shahnameh brought to life in a spectacular fashion by Hamid Rahmanian with shadow puppet design and cinematic wizardry.”

WHO:
Conceived, designed and directed by 2014 Guggenheim fellow, award-winning artist Hamid Rahmanian in collaboration with Larry Reed and ShadowLight Productions.
