Completion of Lower Silver Creek Flood Protection Project will reduce flood risks for areas exposed to decades of severe flooding and damage.

The Santa Clara Valley Water District is celebrating the completion of a major portion of the Lover Silver Creek Flood Protection Project between Intersate 680 and Story Road.

Completion of a major portion of the Lower Silver Creek Flood Protection Project will reduce flood risks for the properties along the creek between Interstate 680 and Story Road, including the Dobern and Lyndale neighborhoods in East San José. Improvements to this section of the creek include the addition of concrete flood walls, widening the creek channel, raising the Dobern Bridge and enhancing wetland habitat.
In 2002 the water district began working toward a flood protection project along 4.4 miles of Silver Creek from its junction with Coyote Creek upstream, near U.S. Highway 101, to Cunningham Avenue. Through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the project was approved to receive $20 million in federal economic stimulus funds as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). In 2009, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the Lower Silver Creek project, which is the largest ARRA project funded through NRCS.
The cost for the total project will be $191 million when finished by December 2018, and includes additional funding from the state Department of Water Resources of up to $25 million. When the entire project is completed, it will remove approximately 3,800 properties from the FEMA floodzone, eventually reducing flood insurance premiums for residents and business owners.
The remaining elements of the project include vegetation plantings and, improved maintenance access for parts of the creek between North Babb Creek and Lake Cunningham and includes improvements to the lake to capture flows from large storm events.

Speakers (subject to change):
• Interim CEO Norma Camacho, Santa Clara Valley Water District
• Hon. Richard P. Santos, Vice Chair, Santa Clara Valley Water District Board of Directors and District 3 representative
• Hon. Tony Estremera, Santa Clara Valley Water District Board of Directors and District 6 representative
• Hon. Ash Kalra, California State Assembly, District 27
• Hon. Cindy Chavez, Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, District 2
• Patrick Stanton, Project Manager, Santa Clara Valley Water District

San Francisco Opera San Francisco

San Francisco Opera continues its 2017 Summer Season on June 10 at the War Memorial Opera House with Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème. Coinciding with city-wide celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the “Summer of Love,” this revival of one of the greatest love stories in the operatic repertory will feature a brilliant cast including sopranos Erika Grimaldi, Julie Adams and Ellie Dehn; tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz as Rodolfo; and baritone Audun Iversen. Carlo Montanaro conducts the San Francisco Opera Orchestral and Chorus.

Puccini’s deeply moving work of love and loss among a group of bohemian artists in mid-19th-century Paris will be presented in the 2014 production by English director John Caird and designer David Farley. Hailed by The Mercury News for its “elegant staging” and “insightful direction,” this co-production of San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera and Canadian Opera Company presents the four-act opera with a single intermission and two-hour-and-twenty-minute running time.

Sung in Italian with English supertitles, the eight performances of La Bohème are scheduled for June 10 (7:30 p.m.), 15 (7:30 p.m.), 17 (7:30 p.m.), 20 (7:30 p.m.), 23 (7:30 p.m.), 25 (2 p.m.), 29 (7:30 p.m.); and July 2 (2 p.m.), 2017.
