Under the Same Sky: Changing faces of Bayview

Fenghui Zhou and his wife are proud tenants of the newly built affordable senior housing on Third Street in the Bay View district. The couple immigrated to the United States 10 years ago when they were 60-year-old, wanting to experience what lives are like in America. They found freedom here yet lives were not easy. Both Zhou and his wife were engineering technicians specializing in farming irrigation in China with stable income. They became cleaning workers in San Francisco, dwelling in small room in Chinatown without their own bathroom and kitchen. After applying for affordable housing for many years without success, they were accepted to the Armstrong Place senior housing in last April. They are still exploring the neighborhood and making friends to their African American neighbors with limited English skills.

This project is a collaboration of the San Francisco Chronicle/SFGate.com, KTSF Television, a local Asian-language station, and New America Media, an ethnic media association with more than 3,000 member organizations. We launched the project with the idea that telling each other our stories would encourage communities to talk about common goals.

KTSF will air the stories from Monday, July 18th through Friday, July 22nd in the Chinese language, live newscasts at 7pm and 10pm. The stories are also available on the KTSF website . The Chronicle story will be published in the Sunday, July 17 Insight section and posted on SFGATE.com on July 17. Video interviews and Chinese translations will be available on New America Media’s website.
