UC anticipates further tuition increases should Governor Jerry Brown announces additional deficits in the state budget next week, prompting more cuts in education spending .
The UC system needs approximately $130 million from government education funding. If this funding need is not met, a 6% increase in tuition will be necessary.
“There have been cuts including layoffs, programs, student services. We probably have cut pretty much all we can without beginning to affect the quality of the universities.” says UC Spokesperson Steve Montiel.
UC regents are scheduled to meet next Wednesday in Sacramento to consider options to deal with funding shortfalls . That will happen after Governor Brown reveals his revised state budget proposal next Monday.
