SANTA CRUZ (BCN)

Two suspects are being sought in Santa Cruz in connection with the robbery and shooting of a man who attempted to chase the suspects after they stole his backpack Tuesday night, police said.

The victim, a 28-year-old Santa Cruz resident, was walking home in the 800 block of Riverside Avenue around 9 p.m. when two masked suspects approached him, police said. The suspects, who were reportedly armed with handguns, demanded that the man hand over his backpack, which contained books and groceries.

The victim put down his pack, and the suspects snatched it and began to flee, according to police. When the victim chased them, he was shot. The wound was not life-threatening, and he was taken to Dominican Hospital where he was treated and released.

The suspects are described as two males in their late teens or early 20s. They were both wearing gray hoodies and bandanas over their faces, one white and the other blue. The pair was last seen running north on Riverside Avenue, according to police.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crime to contact the Santa Cruz Police Department’s Investigations Unit at (831) 420-5820.
