Taiwan leader transits through US, meets lawmaker

Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-jeou has met with a prominent Democratic lawmaker during a stopover in New York on his way to Paraguay and the Caribbean.

Top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Eliot Engel, said in a statement Monday he discussed with Ma “how to reinforce the strong bond between our two countries.”

Overseas visits by Taiwanese leaders remain a bone of contention with mainland China, which regards the self-governing island as part of its territory and objects to diplomatic recognition accorded to Taipei by other governments.

Ma has transited through the U.S. several times since he took office in 2008 but such stops are low-key. Washington switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979.

Ma will transit through Los Angeles on his return journey.
