Police shot and killed a man who claimed to have murdered someone inside a Sunnyvale home early Thursday morning, and officers have found a woman’s body inside the residence, a police spokesman said.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, called police around 8 a.m. to tell them about the murder, which he said happened inside his home in the 600 block of San Pedro Ave., Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Capt. Dave Pitts said.

Police responded, surrounded the residence, evacuated nearby homes and shut down streets in the area of San Pedro and Coachella avenues.

At 8:53 a.m., a SWAT vehicle was driven onto the front yard of the gray one-story house. Roughly 10 SWAT officers wearing bulletproof vests then approached the front of the home.

A few moments later, a voice could be heard on a loudspeaker saying, “Come out with your hands up,” almost immediately followed by about six gunshots in rapid succession.

After the shots were fired, several officers who had been waiting nearby ran toward the home. Moments later, the officers were seen walking calmly back to where they had been.

Pitts said the man had come out of the house armed with a weapon.

“He charged at the officers with the weapon. The officers opened fire,” Pitts said.

After the shooting, police entered the home and found the woman’s body inside, he said.

Pitts said that before approaching the home, police had made numerous phone calls and used a bullhorn in attempts to communicate with the suspect.

He said police are still working to determine the identities of the man and woman.

Neighbor Tom Cottam, 62, who has lived down the street on Coachella Avenue since 1958, said he believes the people who lived at the home where the standoff occurred were husband and wife.

“We’ve never had anything like this happen in this neighborhood,” he said.

After hearing that police said the suspect was armed, Cottam said, “It’s unfortunate that the guy had a weapon and that those officers had no choice but to kill him.”
