A local Chinese family is devastated following a car accident that occurred on September 24. The Sun family was driving in San Francisco’s Silver Terrace neighborhood at Bacon and Bayshore when their car was struck by another vehicle whose driver is suspected of running a red light.
The husband Kent Sun, who was driving the car at the time, has been in a coma ever since. The wife Elaine Tan and 3 year old son were badly injured. The family has been presented the option of possibly discontinuing life support but they don’t want to make that hard choice at this time and say they are still “hoping for a miracle.” The wife’s brother says “We will not give up.”
Tan said, “The guy ran the red light and struck us. I didn’t know what happen. When I woke up I was in the hospital.”
The husband, Kent Sun, is in intensive care at San Francisco General Hospital. The brother-in-law says “From medical stand point, Kent Sun’s brain is dead. His spine sustained serious injuries. “
The wife sustained many broken bones. She needs to use a wheel chair to move around and the recovery is expected to take months. The 3 years old son also suffered two broken bones.
Elaine Tan sys of the tragedy. “My husband is now vegetative. So sad, my family is broken.”
Kent Sun used to operate a music store in Chinatown. He was the major income earner of the family. Another son, 10 months old, is being taken care of by grandparents. His wife says “I don’t know how to continue.”
San Francisco Police and the District Attorney’s office are still deciding on whether to press charges against the driver of the other vehicle.
The Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association is organizing a fundraiser to help the family. Checks can be made payable to: CCBA譚艷蘭(Elaine Tan)
