Streets near the South Hayward BART station remain closed in the wake of a fatal officer-involved shooting early this morning, and are not expected to reopen until about noon, a Hayward police spokesman said.
As of 9:20 a.m., Tennyson Road was still shut down between Mission Boulevard and the BART tracks as police continued to investigate the shooting, in which a man was shot and killed after he reversed his car toward officers, Lt. Roger Keener said.
Police responded to reports of a shooting at the Dirty Bird bar at 29308 Tennyson Road just before 1 a.m.
They arrived to find that one person had been shot. The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound, and has since been released, police said.
Officers investigating the shooting learned that the shooter had fled and was said to be driving a dark-colored Buick or Cadillac. They searched the area and found a car matching that description on Tennyson west of Mission, police said.
While the officers were attempting to make contact with the driver, he allegedly reversed his car toward them, police said. That is when police shot the driver, killing him, Keener said.
No officers were injured.
The suspect’s name has not yet been released.
