Social media becomes recruiting grounds for pimps

Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have become recruiting grounds for pimps.

Authorities say women accept friends on these sites only to find a pimp on the other end of the request.

Experts say it can be easy to lure in a victim.

“What they do is they spot easy victims. Somebody who is needy, somebody who is looking for love, maybe they’re overweight, maybe they’re not popular, or maybe they had a bad breakup, so they are at risk. And in the same way sharks look for floundering – yeah, these guys do the same thing and they’re easier to spot online than you realize.”

Facebook says it takes human trafficking very seriously and has built “complex technical systems” to flag and block such material.

There is also a Facebook Safety Advisory Board that consults with organizations on issues related to online safety.
