SF: sheriff’s deputy arrested in bank robbery

Police arrested a San Francisco sheriff’s deputy this morning in connection with a bank robbery in the city’s Outer Richmond neighborhood earlier this month.

Police arrested Phillip Tong this morning in the 400 block of Seventh Street on suspicion of felony robbery and burglary charges, according to Officer Albie Esparza.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Susan Fahey confirmed that Tong is a sworn deputy with the department.

Tong was arrested in connection with a Nov. 7 bank robbery at the Bank of America at 3701 Balboa St.

The suspect in that incident walked into the bank at 4:50 p.m. and handed a teller a note demanding money, Esparza said.

The note said the suspect had a weapon, but no weapon was displayed, police said.

The teller handed over cash and the suspect fled on foot.

Fahey said Tong will be suspended pending an investigation into the case and will be placed on unpaid leave.
