San Leandro police seek sexual assault suspect

Police released a sketch Tuesday of a suspect who sexually assaulted a young girl in a restroom in the pool area of a San Leandro apartment complex Saturday.

The pre-adolescent girl was with her family in the pool area of the Lakeside Village apartment complex in the 3000 block of Waterfall Way at about 4:35 p.m. Saturday when she went to use the women’s restroom, police said.

A man attacked and sexually assaulted her once she got into the bathroom. He fled before police arrived.

Police said that the suspect is not believed to live in the apartment complex but either was there visiting someone who does live there or followed someone inside.

He is described as a black man between 19 and 20 years old who is 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs 140-180 pounds and has tattoos on his arms.

Detectives have been examining forensic evidence, searching for surveillance video and interviewing witnesses to try and track down the suspect, police said.

“We are committed to solving this violent crime and bringing resolution to the survivor and her family as soon as possible,” San Leandro police Lt. Robert McManus said in a statement.

Anyone with information about the case or who can identify the suspect has been asked to contact San Leandro police at (510) 577-2740 or anonymously at (510) 577-3278.
