SJ: Suspected DUI driver arrested in fatal crash

A San Jose man was arrested after a crash that left his passenger dead on interstate Highway 880 in San Jose late Monday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Around 10:40 p.m., a 23-year-old man identified as Henry Lee was driving a Honda Civic north on Highway 880 onto the North Bascom Avenue exit “at an excessive speed for existing roadway conditions,” according to a CHP report on the crash.

For unknown reasons, the Honda crashed into a concrete rail on the edge of the off-ramp, overturned and landed on its roof on the North Bascom Avenue on-ramp to northbound Highway 880, according to the CHP.

San Jose Fire Department personnel located the vehicle and pronounced the passenger dead at the scene.

He has been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office as 23-year-old Thuan Nguyen.

Lee was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose with minor injuries, according to the CHP.

The CHP received at least one report that the passenger appeared to have been partially ejected out of the car in the crash, according to Officer Ralph Caggiano.

CHP officials said a preliminary investigation revealed drug or alcohol intoxication was a factor in the crash.

Lee was arrested on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, according to the CHP.
