A pit bull was fatally shot by police after an officer was bit during an investigation into mail theft early Wednesday morning in San Jose.
At about 1:30 a.m., police received a 911 report of three suspects breaking into mailboxes in the 900 bock of La Barbera Drive in San Jose.
The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle before police arrived.
Witnesses provided officers with a description of the suspects and the suspect vehicle.
Officers were able to track the vehicle back to an address in the 500 block of North Third Street in San Jose.
The vehicle was registered to an owner who was on searchable probation, -police said.
Officers conducted a probation search and made contact with a female at the residence.
According to police, officers were talking to the female when a large pit bull appeared from a basement area of the residence and bit an officer.
Fearing for the officer’s life and the lives of the other officers, a police officer shot the dog.
The officer was transported to a nearby hospital and is being treated for injuries not considered life-threatening.
The pit bull was died at the scene, according to police.
Officers are continuing to investigate the mail theft investigation but have not made any arrests.
