Fatal pedestrian accidents in San Jose and Alameda

Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run collision in South San Jose this morning, a police spokesman said. Officers responded to a report of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle in the area of East Capitol Expressway and Seven Trees Boulevard around 1:35 a.m., Officer Albert Morales said.

Arriving officers found a man in the roadway suffering from serious injuries and soon after he was pronounced dead at the scene, Morales said.

The suspect vehicle struck the victim and fled the scene, he said. No description of the suspect or suspect vehicle was immediately available.

A 64-year-old woman was fatally struck by a minivan while crossing a street in Alameda early this morning, a police lieutenant said. The collision was reported at 4:52 a.m. in the 2200 block of OtisDrive, Alameda police Lt. Jill Ottaviano said.

The woman, whose name is not yet being released, was walking from the north curb of Otis Drive across the street toward the South Shore shopping center in an area without a marked crosswalk, Ottaviano said.

She was struck in the far right eastbound lane by the minivan, which had two men inside, according to Ottaviano. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the minivan stopped after the collision and are cooperating with investigators, Ottaviano said. The lieutenant said Otis Drive is expected to be blocked in the area for several hours while police investigate the deadly collision.
