A train fatally struck a woman on the tracks in Salinas on Saturday night, a police commander said.
At about 6:20 p.m., Salinas police officers were dispatched to the railroad tracks about an eighth of a mile north of the train station, near the 800 block of West Market Street, regarding a pedestrian that had been hit by a train, Salinas police Commander David Crabill said.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers located a Hispanic woman in her early 40s deceased on the side of the tracks. Investigators believe the woman may have intentionally put herself in front of the train, Crabill said.
The woman has been identified but her identity is being withheld pending notification of her family, according to Crabill.
The investigation was turned over to Union Pacific Police Department and the body was turned over to the Monterey County coroner’s office, Crabill said.
