Police arrest woman for assault at UC Berkeley

BERKELEY (BCN)

University of California at Berkeley police arrested a woman Tuesday who allegedly attacked and tried to stab a man while screaming incoherently outside the campus’s Energy and Bioscience Building, police said.

The attack, reported at 7:13 a.m., occurred on the walkway near the west steps of the building, located between Oxford Street and Shattuck Avenue, police said.

A 59-year-old man had started rifling through a pile of items that he found near the steps when a woman ran toward him and pushed him to the ground, according to police.

He stood up but she pushed him down again and punched him. She then got on top of him and grabbed a knife from his pocket and tried to stab him while yelling incoherently, police said.

The man grabbed her hands to prevent her from stabbing him and yelled for help. A campus security officer showed up, followed by police officers, who arrested a woman later identified as Baneka Flood, 39.

The man had cuts to his hands but no other injuries.

Anyone with information about the incident as been asked to call UC Berkeley police at (510) 642-0472 or (510) 642-6760.
