OAKLAND (BCN)
The Oakland Police Department is reporting an increase of purse snatching incidents in central Oakland and advising residents not to fight back.

Oakland police said assailants grab purses and victims often resist. Officers said there has been an increase in injuries as a result.

Police suggest that members of the community stay aware of their surroundings and remain in well-lit, populated areas.

Other tips include not leaving packages or valuables in your vehicle or showing large amounts of cash while making a purchase.

Police encourage residents not to let themselves be distracted by cell phones and other electronic devices.
