New laws go into effect on New Year’s Day

New laws in California and the Bay Area starting January 1, 2013

- California sales tax increase a quarter of one percent and is set to last over next four years. It’s expected to generate extra $6 billion a year funding for public education.

- San Francisco’s minimum wage rises again to $10.55, the highest minimum wage in the nation.

- San Francisco parking meter Sunday enforcement takes effect on Janurary 6, 2013.  All of meters usually free on Sunday now operate from noon to 6 pm.

- Alameda County’s retail stores selling packaged foods or alchhol is banned to give out plastic checkout bags. Customers have to pay the minimum 10 cents for each recycled paper or reusable bag that they requested.
