New free earthquake preparation App

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 25, 2012)

A new American Red Cross app for iPhone and Android can help Californians stay informed about earthquakes in their area. The free app also shows people how to plan ahead for and recover after an earthquake.

Available in Spanish and English,”Earthquake” comes on the heels of successful first aid and hurricane apps released over the last few months by the Red Cross and downloaded more than 1 million times by mobile users nationwide.

Features include:

· Notifications showing the epicenter, magnitude and intensity of earthquakes, as well as historical data for earthquakes in an area over the last 40 years.

· “I’m safe” messaging for users to broadcast reassurance to family and friends via social media

· Locations of open Red Cross shelters;

· Steps to create an emergency plan

· Preloaded emergency preparedness content, available when phones are offline or out of service

· Information about fires, tsunamis and other disasters that could happen in the aftermath of an earthquake

· Emergency toolkits with a flashlight, strobe light and audible alarm

· Interactive quizzes where users can earn badges and share their earthquake knowledge on social networks

Over the past three months, the Red Cross has made great strides in using mobile platforms to deliver emergency information. During Hurricane Isaac, the hurricane app was used by people to find Red Cross shelters and to send “I’m safe” messages. Earthquake can help Californians in the same way during the next big one.
