Marine deserter sentenced for fatal stabbing

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A Marine Corps deserter and son of Christian missionaries has been sentenced to at least 35 years in prison for fatally stabbing a motel maid in Eastern Oregon and trying to beat a woman to death on a jogging path.

The East Oregonian ( reports that 23-year-old Lukah Chang pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder charges and was sentenced Wednesday in Umatilla County Circuit Court in Pendleton.

He admitted killing Amyjane Brandhagen on Aug. 14, 2012 and using a metal pipe to try to beat Karen Lange to death on Aug. 9, 2013. Both attacks were in Pendleton.

He was arrested after police recognized him in surveillance video from the jogging path. He told police he had deserted from Camp Pendleton in California.
