Mandatory maternity insurance coverage takes effect July 1

California requires all health insurance plans to include maternity coverage starting 1st July, regardless of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Obamacare.

While large group health insurance plans and HMOs in California currently provide maternity coverage, only 12% of private individual plans did the same in 2010.

California Governor Jerry Brown signed the maternity coverage bill last October. Health policy … group Equal Health Network believes the new law will help lower maternity coverage premium s . While major insurers Anthem Blue Cross of California and Kaiser Permanente voiced support for the law, the California Chamber of Commerce said it will deter insurers from offering discount insurance plans.
