A motorist who died Tuesday in a crash that Richmond police said occurred as he was driving away from the scene of a hit-and-run collision has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as 33-year-old Yuba City resident Shane Anthony Cooper.
Cooper, who was handicapped, was killed when his van crashed into a tree in the 3400 block of Richmond Parkway in Richmond shortly after noon, police said.
Moments earlier, he had been driving on the Richmond Parkway off-ramp from westbound Interstate Highway 80 when he struck another car, causing damage to both vehicles but no injuries, according to the CHP.
Cooper, who was alone in the van, continued driving after the first collision but lost control of his vehicle, which crashed into the tree and overturned, police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash shut down a stretch of westbound Richmond Parkway for several hours on Tuesday afternoon.
