Authorities in San Carlos are warning residents to watch out for online scams and setups after a man responding to a Craigslist ad for discounted gift cards was robbed at a local Home Depot store.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the store at 1125 Old County Road at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday after a 40-year-old San Carlos resident said he was robbed of his cash and struck several times by the suspects, San Mateo County sheriff’s Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt said.

The victim said he had responded to a Craigslist ad offering discounted gift cards and had arranged a meeting to buy the cards at the Home Depot store, Rosenblatt said.

Once there, the victim told deputies that two men, both in their 30s, arrived in a silver four-door Lexus sedan, according to Rosenblatt.

The suspects were last seen traveling east on Brittan Avenue headed toward U.S. Highway 101. The car they were driving was later determined to have been stolen out of San Francisco, Rosenblatt said.

The sheriff’s office provides police services for the city of San Carlos.
