A man died in a collision Monday night on the Golden Gate Bridge after police tried talk to him as he was on the west walkway, a spokeswoman for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District said.
At about 8:45 p.m. bridge patrol officers approached the man to talk to him because some people try to jump from the bridge and the walkways are off limits after sunset.
Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District spokeswoman Priya Clemens said the man tried to evade officers.
He went over the handrail, ran across the southbound lanes and was struck by a vehicle in the northbound lanes.
Bridge patrol officers and California Highway Patrol officers administered CPR for eight to nine minutes but the man died, Clemens said.
The collision occurred on the north end of the bridge.
