Man dies after becoming engulfed in flames at golf course

A 56-year-old man died after becoming engulfed in flames at a public golf course in Pacific Grove on Sunday morning, a police sergeant said today.

Paramedics pronounced Pacific Grove resident Richard Haffner dead at the Pacific Grove Golf Links course shortly after responding to multiple 911 calls at about 7:20 a.m., according to Pacific Grove police Sgt. Jeff Fenton.

Fenton said witnesses had reported seeing a man on fire near the golf course’s restrooms in the area of Ocean View Boulevard and Asilomar Avenue.

Firefighters arriving at the scene also found a fence outside the restroom on fire, Fenton said.

The death is considered suspicious, and the Monterey County coroner’s office is investigating the cause of death, he said.
