A person of interest in an Alum Rock stabbing this afternoon that left a woman and a 1-year-old boy dead and a 3-year-old girl hospitalized was detained in San Francisco tonight, a Santa Clara County sheriff’s spokesman said.
Sheriff’s deputies first responded to the home on Viewmont Avenue near Alum Rock Avenue at 3:30 p.m. after receiving a report from a family member that the three had been stabbed, Deputy Kurtis Stenderup said.
The woman, 48, and the boy were pronounced dead at the scene. The girl was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition tonight, Stenderup said.
The woman was the two children’s grandmother.
Deputies quickly identified a person of interest in the case, 29-year-old Reuben Ramirez, a family member who also lives at the residence.
Stenderup said that Ramirez has a history of mental illness and that the sheriff’s office has responded to calls about him at the home before.
Ramirez was located in San Francisco tonight by San Francisco police and the U.S. Marshals Service. He is in custody and being interviewed by investigators who have not yet decided if he will be considered a suspect in the case, Stenderup said.
