A 24-year-old Lyft driver has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting an unconscious victim and using an intoxicating substance in the commission of the crime, Fremont police said Wednesday morning.
A 29-year-old woman hailed a ride April 8, and Fremont resident Jawanthreddy Baireddy picked her up in Oakland, according to police.
Baireddy initially drove the victim to an address in Berkeley, but her friend wasn’t at that location and the suspect allegedly then said he was going “off duty” and offered her a ride home, police said.
Instead he took her to his own residence in the 38000 block of Camden Street, escorted her into his home and offered her marijuana.
Later, he allegedly directed her upstairs, sexually assaulted her and eventually drove her back to her own home, police said.
Baireddy was arrested on suspicion of forced oral copulation on an unconscious victim, rape by means where the victim is unconscious and forced digital penetration on a victim who is prevented from resisting due to the use of an intoxicating substance.
He’s still being held in jail on no-bail status. Police said that as a Lyft operator, Bairedy was driving a white Hyundai Elantra.
They’re asking anyone with information about the crime or other incidents that may have involved Baireddy to contact Detective Tang at (510) 790-6900 or email@example.com.
