Bay Area Tibetan people and supporters held a protest in front of the Chinese Consulate today. Protesters claimed that China’s systematic repression and tyrannical rule in Tibet is responsible for a series of self-immolation incidents in China. Eleven young Tibetans including 2 nuns set fire to themselves in China this year since March. At least 6 died.
The spokesperson for the Tibetan Association of Northern California, Thepo Tulku said, “they wanted to show they didn’t find any other solution for them, that’s why they did for the world to show how much suffering they’re having right now.”
The Chinese government denounced the self-immolation incidents, and the Chinese media is calling the Dali Lama responsible. The self-immolation incidents have brought international attention to Tibet.
The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in San Francisco did not comment on today’s protest.
