A Silicon Valley venture capitalist is submitting signatures for a ballot initiative that calls for splitting California into six separate states.
In Sacramento County on Tuesday, Tim Draper delivered what he says are 44,000 signatures out of the 1.3 million his campaign says it has collected statewide.
Draper says the state of 38.3 million people has become ungovernable and that there are too many diverse interests to have an effective government.
He wants to divide California into six states called Jefferson, North California, Silicon Valley, Central California, West California and South California. If he submits enough signatures, the measure would appear on the ballot in November 2016.
Critics note that the plan would separate the wealthiest and poorest Californians, potentially creating some of the poorest states in the nation.
