The two right lanes of northbound Interstate Highway 680 in Milpitas are blocked after a passing motorist fatally injured a highway construction worker this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to the CHP, the unidentified construction worker was standing outside at a construction site on the right-hand shoulder of northbound I-680 when a passing motorist fatally struck him.
The driver of the vehicle also collided with the rear of a pickup truck and a second highway construction worker, according to the CHP.
The driver was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the CHP.
The second highway construction worker was transported to Regional Medical Center with minor injuries and is in stable condition this morning, according to the CHP.
The collision on northbound I-680, just south of the Scott Creek Road off-ramp, was reported at about 2:40 a.m., according to the CHP.
The identity of the deceased highway construction worker has not been released and the cause of the collision remains under investigation.
According to the CHP, the roadway is likely to fully reopen at about 6 a.m.
