A former Salinas High School counselor has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading no contest to 56 charges relating to lewd acts against minors and child pornography, according to the Monterey County District Attorney’s office.

Gilbert Olivares, 36, will also have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Olivares pleaded no contest to the charges in April.

Salinas police launched an investigation of Olivares, a student counselor at Salinas High School, in March 2012, when the 14-year-old sister of a boy reported seeing sexually explicit communications between her underage brother and Olivares on the boy’s Facebook account.

Police detectives investigated and found that the boy and three other boys had been victims of sexual abuse by Olivares, Mazariegos said.

Officers served a search warrant at his home and seized hundreds of images of child pornography on the man’s computer, none of which were of the victims.

Detectives then conducted a forensic examination of Olivares’ cellphone and recovered hundreds of sexually explicit texts from him to Salinas High School students and 13 videos showing students engaging in sexual acts in his school office.

Police discovered that Olivares had set up his phone to record videos in his office, called a male student and a female student, both minors, out of class and directed them to go into his office.

He would then leave the office and the students would engage in sex while the phone recorded it. There was no evidence that the videos had been distributed.

Prosecutors said the ensuing investigation revealed hundreds of images of child pornography on Olivares’ computer, hundreds of sexually explicit texts between Olivares and several Salinas High School students and 13 video files of students engaging in sexual acts in Olivares’ office.
