Continuing the Palo Alto Philharmonic’s commitment to perform music of the 21st century, the second concert of this 27th season features a major work for solo soprano and orchestra by Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra.

Beyond the Silence of Sorrow features soprano soloist Jouvanca Jean-Baptiste.  Ms. Jean-Baptiste recently received high praise for her performance in the title role of Tosca with the Florida Grand Opera and is well known for her two outstanding seasons as Principal Resident Artist with Opera San Jose.

The orchestra opens the program with the stirring Manfred Overture of Robert Schumann, one of the great ‘romantic’ composers of the 19th century.

Continuing in the romantic tradition, the Philharmonic presents Introduction & Love Scene from Romeo and Juliet by Hector Berlioz; the Shakespeare balcony scene, which inspired the Berlioz, will be read as well.  The concert also includes Les Préludes, by the late 19th century composer/pianist, Franz Liszt. This tone poem interprets in music the philosophy of the French romantic poet Lamartine: life is but a prelude to an unknown song.
