Thomas B. Gold, Professor of Sociology at the University of California and Executive Director of the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies, will be the moderator of both days’ panel discussions as well as a featured speaker.
Workshop Goals: Enable teachers to become more knowledgeable about China and U.S.-China issues and commit a larger portion of their classroom time to delivering lessons on China that are relevant, stimulating and consistent with Common Core State Standards. Prepare students for a better understanding of China in the 21st Century as China emerges as a major power in the world.
Workshop Content: In the last three decades, China’s economy has grown at an incredible average rate of over 10 percent a year. At the same time, pollution in major cities is literally “off the charts” and poses severe health threats to the Chinese people, especially children. Undoubtedly, economic development and environmental sustainability are two of the hottest issues in China. Balancing these two forces presents both challenges and opportunities for the new leadership of President Xi Jinping. This two-day workshop will explore in depth these critical issues and how they are intertwined, from both historical and current perspectives, and will take into account China’s relations with the world community, especially the United States.
What Teachers Can Expect: Stimulating presentations and discussions led by a panel of prominent experts on China, opportunity to share ideas with like-minded educators during break-out sessions, and studio time for collaborating with fellow teachers in developing lesson resources.

Attendees: Attendees to this Workshop were selected based on a review of the applicants’ interests and subjects taught, and are high school or middle school teachers interested in China’s impact through multi-disciplinary perspectives. Specifically, those who teach World History, U.S. History, Government/Civics, Economics, Chinese Language and Culture. A number of teacher teams have also been formed to work on specific curricula.
