The Palo Alto Philharmonic begins its 26th season with a gala performance of grand opera favorites.  Soprano Juyeon Song, tenor Ben Bongers, and singers from Opera on Tap, San Francisco, join the Palo Alto Philharmonic in an evening of overtures and arias composed by two giants of the operatic literature, Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi.

Under the direction of Thomas Shoebotham, the orchestra opens the evening with four works by Richard Wagner, beginning with the Overture to his first successful opera, Rienzi (1842).  Next, tenor Ben Bongers, widely admired for his lyrical phrasing as well as his powerful performance, sings Nur eine waffe taugt (Only one weapon heals.) from Parsifal (1882), Wagner’s final opera. Two more Wagner arias follow: Geliebter, sag! (Beloved, say!), a duet with Mr. Bongers and soprano Juyeon Song, from Tannhauser, and the tragic Liebestod (Love-Death) from Tristan und Isolde performed by Ms. Song. Juyeon  Song, whose voice has been praised as “amazing,” is known also for the depth of her dramatic performance.

The second half of the evening’s presentation features works by Giuseppe Verdi, perhaps the most prolific opera composer of all, with 28 operas written between 1839 and 1893.
