Several hundred people have been evacuated from the Frank Hagel Federal Building in Richmond this morning after a suspicious package was found in the building, fire officials said.

A short time after 10 a.m., an employee called 911 to report a suspicious package with unknown contents found in the building located at 1221 Nevin Ave., Richmond Fire Chief Michael Banks said.

He said hundreds of workers were evacuated from the six-story building and are waiting outside a safe distance away.

A bomb squad from the University of California at Berkeley was en route to the building to investigate the suspicious package as of 11:15 a.m., the chief said.
