Taiwan is known the world over for its peaceful transformation over the past decades from an authoritarian society to a robust democracy, culminating in its first direct presidential and vice presidential election in 1996. The first and second transfers of power between political parties in 2000 and 2008 also bore great significance in Taiwan’s democratization.
There are some differences for the upcoming presidential election, such as an earlier voting date which is Jan 14th instead of March. It also includes the congressional election so as to save government resources.
