A US airliner nearly collided with a drone over Florida in March.
A pilot of the regional jet told officials he came dangerously close to a quote, “small remotely piloted aircraft” near the tallahassee regional airport, according to the FAA.
Jim Williams, head of the f-a-a’s unmanned aircraft systems, talked about potential perils during a presentation yesterday (thursday) at the small unmanned business expo.
Video of his talk was posted on YouTube.
Williams said there was another incident at the virginia motor speedway, in which an unmanned aircraft crashed into the stands.
He noted that a drone getting sucked into a jetliner engine could be much worse than say, a bird strike.
Williams said the incidents are evidence why detect and avoid standards must be developed for drone.
