Some doctors in China deserve a hand — of applause — for a very creative surgery to save a man’s hand.
A worker in a family workshop accidentally cut off his hand.
Doctors temporarily reattached it to the area around his ankle and calf so the rest of his arm could heal.
The man said the hand was warm but numb, since only blood vessels and no nerves were connected.
After about a month, he had another surgery in which his hand was reattached in its proper place.
Doctors told him a full recovery for the nerves in the hand should take about six months.
The lead doctor believes about 20 such operations have taken place in China, all successful.
He said in a similar operation in 2004, he grafted a hand onto a patient’s belly.
