OAKLAND (BCN)

A man died after being shot by California Highway Patrol officers during a foot pursuit in East Oakland Tuesday night in the second CHP officer-involved shooting of the day, a police spokeswoman said today.

At about 9 p.m. Tuesday, two CHP officers pulled over a newer model Toyota SUV in the 5200 block of Wentworth Avenue, Oakland police Officer Johnna Watson said.

The car pulled over and one of the passengers fled on foot. He was seen armed with a handgun, Watson said.

A CHP K-9 was deployed and the two officers pursued the man. The police dog engaged the suspect and the officers discharged their weapons, hitting the man, according to Watson.

Watson said the officer rendered aid to the suspect until medical personnel arrived at the scene. The man, whose name has not yet been released, later succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The police dog was also hit by gunfire and is expected to survive.

A loaded weapon was recovered from the man. The driver of the SUV fled the scene. It is only described as silver in color with red and white paper license plates.

Police are asking the public for help locating the driver and other passengers of the car. Anyone with information is asked to call Oakland police at (510) 238-3821.

The incident remains under investigation.

The shooting was the second CHP officer-involved shooting in Oakland of the day. At about 3 a.m. Tuesday, a CHP officer shot and killed a driver of a car following a car chase.

The chase ended in a cul-de-sac in the 5700 block of East 15th Street where the driver of a silver BMW SUV crashed into two parked cars and jumped out of the car, according to the CHP.

The driver then approached the two officers with a firearm in his hand, prompting them to shoot him.

The officers attempted to administer CPR to the driver, who was pronounced dead a short time later by emergency responders, according to the CHP.
