A California man says he woke up Sunday to find the pond on his property didn’t look the same as it did when he went to bed.
It turns out a sinkhole drained it.
Mark Korb says the man-made pond now looks like the surface of the Moon.
He says a few years ago, he drained the pond with a pump. The project took him seven days to complete.
He says the sinkhole managed to empty it much faster — in four or five hours.
A college geology professor weighed in on what may have caused the sinkhole.
“There was such a lot of mining activity going on, we almost never know when there was some man-made type of cavity underground. And then any kind of way the water can make it there – maybe there was a pre-existing fracture or a fracture formed, you know, that water could have drained very fast.”
Sinkholes have been making a lot of headlines lately.
On Tuesday, a small sinkhole opened up in a sidewalk in a Washington D-C neighborhood.
And on Friday, a golfer was swallowed up by an 18-foot sinkhole in Illinois, but survived.
