SAN PABLO (BCN)
A woman who authorities said abducted her three children from their San Pablo home and prompted a statewide Amber Alert has been arrested on suspicion of killing her children’s father, a police commander said Tuesday morning.
Officers located 35-year-old Alicia Ortez and her three children, 12-year-old Hugo, Merari, 6, and Jenh Carlos, 3, at a home in the 400 block of South Eighth Street in Richmond around 11:30 p.m. Monday, San Pablo police Cmdr. Jeff Palmieri said.
The children “are safe and in a good place and we’re seeking the proper services for them,” Palmieri said.
He said police arrested Ortez and her male companion, whose name is not yet being released due to the ongoing investigation, in connection with the fatal shooting of the children’s father.
The man’s body was found in the backyard of a home in the 1600 block of 16th Street in San Pablo around 8 a.m. Monday, according to police.
When police were unable to find Ortez and the children after discovering the body, they asked for the public’s help in locating them.
A statewide Amber Alert was issued for the three children. San Pablo police initially said their last names were Ortez, but the California Highway Patrol later announced in the Amber Alert that the children all have the last name of Anguiano.
All three lived in San Pablo with their father, who was estranged from Ortez.
Palmieri said police have not determined a motive for the killing and said he did not have information about the estranged couple’s child custody arrangement.
He said police hope to present the case to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office for review later this week.
A Contra Costa County coroner’s deputy this morning said the coroner’s office is still trying to reach the victim’s relatives in El Salvador before releasing his name.
The deputy said the victim went by the nickname “Oscar.”
