SACRAMENTO, California (AP) California would become the latest U.S. state to allow immigrants who are in the country illegally to have a driver’s license under a bill that has passed the Legislature. Gov. Jerry Brown supports it.
The state has the nation’s largest immigrant population.
As of late Thursday, both chambers of the state Legislature had approved the bill.
That would make California the 11th state to allow immigrants to apply for licenses, according to the bill’s author.
“This bill will enable millions of people to get to work safely and legally,” Brown said in a statement. “Hopefully, it will send a message to Washington that immigration reform is long past due.”
In Washington, Congress has been working on an overhaul of the nation’s tangled immigration system ?a rare issue that has found bipartisan support. But work has been pushed aside by the Syria crisis.
Supporters said California’s roads would be safer because immigrants would be eligible to buy insurance. The insurance industry and the California Police Chiefs Association supported the bill.
