Four-year-old Qizai, the fifth brown panda spotted in the world, has spent four years at the Shaanxi Rare Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Research Center and is growing healthy.
Since 1985, five pandas in brown color have been discovered, all around Foping County in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, according to the Center. Qizai was discovered in November 2009 as a cut and has been raised at the Center.
While pandas in brown are rare in the species known as living fossils, which are dominantly black and white, Qizai is even rarer, according to panda experts. All the previous four siblings found before it are in white with brown spots, only Qizai’s fur is entirely brown.
Panda experts said Qizai’s brown fur may be related to inbreeding and the natural environment of Qinling Mountains, major east-west mountain range in southern Shaanxi.
They will carry further studies to find out the answer.
