SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)

The body of a woman found in an exterior stairwell at San Francisco General Hospital on Tuesday morning has been confirmed as that of 57-year-old Lynne Spaulding, hospital and sheriff’s officials said today.

Spaulding went missing after last being seen on Sept. 14 at the hospital, where she was being treated for an infection.

Family members said they were concerned she may have been confused because of medication she was taking and said she was unwell and frail.

Dr. Todd May, chief medical officer at San Francisco General Hospital, said at a news conference this morning that “this has shaken us to our core.”

May said, “We don’t know what happened to this woman” and expressed condolences for Spaulding’s family.

San Francisco Assistant Sheriff Paul Miyamoto said Spaulding’s body was found on the exterior stairwell by a member of the hospital’s engineering staff doing a routine quarterly check.

Miyamoto said investigators do not yet know how she got into the stairwell or what caused her death.
