Betty Ann Ong Chinese Recreation Center

Ong’s family members were elated about the commission’s decision. On September 11, 2001, Betty Ong was an American Airlines flight attendant onboard of Flight 11 which was the first plane that crashed into the World Trade Center by hijackers. On the plane, Ong calmly communicated details of the hijacking to the officials on the ground. She died as an American hero.

Ong grew up in San Francisco’s Chinatown and often played at the Chinese Recreation Center. The center, which was built in 1951, is undergoing reconstruction. There will be a plaque at the Betty Ann Ong Chinese Recreation Center when it reopens in spring or summer of next year.
