A student at San Francisco’s Balboa High was chosen to be among a group of high school and college students to brief officials on issues important to the Asian & Pacific Islander community.
18 year old Huimin Happy Yang is a senior at Balboa High who came here two years ago with her parents from Guangdong, China. She has been active in working with the local API community as a member of the Youth Commission. Happy also helped to identify the need for affordable public transportation for low-income youth and worked with the SF MTA to provide free Muni passes for students.
Yang was among 200 students from across the country chosen to attend a briefing at the White House to meet API officials. She told KTSF she learned that the Obama administration is concerned about issues important to the API community such as immigration and college tuition fees. Students taking part in the White House meeting were encouraged to get involved in politics.
Yang said she wants to major in political science and hopes to serve the public by being more involved in local politics.
