Synopsis: Latest research by the Pew Research Center shows that app downloaders have doubled in two years. Apps that provide news, weather, sports or stocks updates are most popular.
According to the study, nearly half of all American adults have apps on their phones. And, on average, cell phone users use three to five apps more often.
Apps that regularly provide updates on news, weather, sports or stocks are most popular (74%) while apps that facilitate communications between friends and family members rank second (67%). Educational apps rank third (64%).
The study has also found that desktop users have been declining over the past decade while laptop and cell phone users are becoming popular. The percentage of tablet users has increased from 3% in May 2010 to 10% in August 2011.
The study was conducted nationally through a phone survey of 2,260 adults ages 18 and older between July 25 to August 26 this year.
