An alleged Sureno gang member died after being shot during a fight outside a home in Salinas early Saturday morning, a police sergeant said.
Netzahual Ruiz, 23, was found unresponsive in the 700 block of Elkington Street after Salinas police were dispatched to the scene at 12:20 a.m. on a report of shots fired, Sgt. Jeff Gibson said.
Ruiz, who had suffered multiple bullet wounds, was transported to Natividad Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Witnesses told police that Ruiz had exchanged words with a Hispanic man in his early 20s wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans and dark-colored tennis shoes and they then got into a fistfight, Gibson said.
During the fight, the suspect in the sweatshirt pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds at Ruiz, according to Gibson.
At the same time, a gold-colored, four-door 2004 Honda Accord drove up, and the driver got out and also started shooting at Ruiz, who then collapsed, Gibson said.
According to Gibson, Ruiz was a member of the King City Sureno gang and had an extensive criminal history with Salinas police.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call Salinas police at (831) 775-4222 or the We-Tip line at (800) 78-CRIME.
